Title: "Mastering the DB2 Performance Metrics System with Down Home Country Performance Tools"

Presentation Platform: DB2 for z/OS

Abstract Many organizations today are concerned with the “peak 4-hour rolling average” in a z/OS environment and are looking for ways to reduce this number in order to decrease their monthly software bill. As always, performance metrics are key to determining what programs and resources are performing poorly. By targeting the peak times and the high CPU programs during these times, it is possible to significantly reduce MSUs and improve the performance of DB2 programs, thus reducing cost. This session will show how to gather and interpret real-time and historical performance metrics using CA-Detector (SQL Monitor), CA- Insight for DB2 (Comprehensive DB2 Performance Monitor), CA-Subsystem Analyzer (Object Analyzer) and CA-Chorus (Graphical, Discipline-based Workstation) in a meaningful way. It will also show how SCANA was able to use this information to reduce the 4-hour rolling average.

Objective 1: Understand how CA DB2 Performance tools’ tables and columns can be used to store metrics and create a performance database.
Objective 2: Learn techniques to routinely populate these tables with metrics from these DB2 Performance tools.
Objective 3: Demonstrate use of SQL statements to access this data, show how it can be presented in a meaningful graphical format.
Objective 4: Present specific case studies of how this data is used to reduce CPU and the 4-hour rolling average.
Objective 5: Show how CA-Chorus can be used to track DB2 performance historically.

Robert Caterall's Biography

Robert Catterall is an IBM DB2 for z/OS specialist. He started his IT career with IBM in 1982, and worked throughout the 1990s as a member of the Company's DB2 for z/OS National Technical Support team. From 2000 to 2007, Robert worked as a database technology strategist for CheckFree (now part of Fiserv). After working for three years as an independent DB2 consultant, he rejoined IBM in 2010. Robert is a past President of IDUG, a member of IDUG's Speakers Hall of Fame, and was one of IBM's inaugural Information Champions. He presents frequently at conferences, is a longtime columnist for IBM Data Management Magazine, and blogs about DB2 for z/OS at http://robertsdb2blog.blogspot.com/.

Title: "At Your Service: Optimizing DB2 for z/OS for Client-Server Applications"

Presentation Platform: DB2 for z/OS

Abstract

At sites around the world, an ever-greater percentage of the DB2 for z/OS workload is related to client-server applications (i.e., applications that access DB2 data via DDF, the distributed data facility). This session will provide attendees with information that they can use to help ensure that DB2 is serving network-attached applications with optimal performance, scalability, availability, and security. There will be an emphasis on exploiting features delivered in the last few releases of DB2 for z/OS.

Objective 1: Provide information on the current landscape as it pertains to DB2 for z/OS client-server computing: trends, issues, and opportunities.
Objective 2: Provide information on optimizing DB2 performance in support of client-server applications, including high-performance DBATs, native SQL procedures and UDFs, dynamic statement caching, and DDF-related dispatching priorities.
Objective 3: Provide information on optimizing DB2 scalability in support of client-server applications, including ZPARM settings, type 4 drivers, and data sharing.
Objective 4: Provide information on optimizing DB2 availability in support of client-server applications, including failure avoidance, appropriate use of asynchronous processing, physical database design, and location aliases in a data sharing environment.
Objective 5: Provide information on optimizing DB2 security in support of client-server applications, including roles and trusted contexts, row permissions and column masks, and distributed identity filters.

She is also an accomplished opera singer, and can be seen and heard in local concerts, operas and oratorios.

Title: "DB2PE Performance Database and Performance Warehouse for Dummies"

Presentation Platform: DB2 for z/OS

Abstract:

There is a world of information that can be found in accounting, trace, and statistics data. DB2PE can produce daily reports that give us details at many levels. But if we want to track performance indicators over time, it can be difficult. With the use of the Performance Database and/or Performance Warehouse, we can store that information and report upon it, giving us a new, wider look at our performance data. We will look at the implementation and use of DB2PE for reporting and trend analysis.

Paul Turpin's Biography

Speaker Bio: Paul Turpin is a senior database administrator for a software development company specializing in financial applications. He specializes in DB2 for LUW on large systems. He enjoys exploring new features and functionality in DB2. He has spoken at IDUG North America, IDUG Europe, SHARE, IBM’s Information on Demand conference, and several RUGs. Paul currently serves on the IDUG Board of Directors.

Title: "What Are You Waiting For?"

Presentation Platform: DB2 for Linux, UNIX, Windows

Abstract:

Often we suspect a query is waiting on something because it has a long execution time, but a small CPU time. Is it a lockwait, is it a long compilation time, is it waiting on I/O or something else? It is impossible to resolve the underlying condition until you understand what is wrong. I will show you how to determine what it was waiting on. This presentation will give high level information on time-spent elements. A deep dive into lockwait analysis will be done using various diagnostic tools. Some tools that will be covered are MONREPORT, MON_GET_PKG_CACHE_STMT, MON_LOCKWAITS and the locking event monitor (and queries to read that data). Usage of several configuration parameters including mon_lockwait, mon_lw_thresh, mon_deadlock, mon_locktimeout, locktimeout and maxlocks will be discussed.

Objective 1: High level view of time-spent elements
Objective 2: Tools for looking at wait times using MONREPORT, MON_GET_PKG_CACHE_STMT
Objective 3: Lockwait analysis using MON_LOCKWAITS and other tools
Objective 4: Locking event monitor usage and locking table queries
Objective 5: Usage of configuration parameters including mon_lockwait, mon_lw_thresh, mon_deadlock, mon_locktimeout, locktimeout and maxlocks

Title: "Federate DB2 to Read Oracle Databases"

Presentation Platform: DB2 for Linux, UNIX, Windows

Abstract:

It can be very useful to federate heterogeneous databases like Oracle in a DB2 database. In this presentation you will learn how to perform several steps involved with federating an Oracle database in a DB2 database. Using the tips in this presentation, you should be able to avoid most of the pitfalls associated with setting up federation.

Objective 1: Install Relational Connectors
Objective 2: Install and configure Oracle including TNS configuration
Objective 3: Configure DB2 to communicate with Oracle
Objective 4: Create DB2 objects that allow communication with Oracle server
Objective 5: Test the DB2 to Oracle communication
