Use of Discussion Groups by the Database Professional

There are over 3,000 discussion groups on the Internet. Several of these are of interest to the database professional. There are also a number of structured mailing lists on the Internet, that are useful to the database professional. These mailing lists allow you to communicate with other mailing list members through email Both the discussion groups and mailing lists resources are part of BITNET. The information that is exchanged through the discussion groups is archived and can be retrieved. To coordinate the use of these resources there is something called LISTSERV. It automatically handles the administration of BITNET, signing people up for mailing lists, removing them form lists, sending documentation about LISTSERV functions, retrieving archive data, etc.
To get a list of all the groups send an email to LISTSERV@BITNIC.binet. Leave the subject blank and put LIST GLOBAL in the message body The very long document will be sent to your email box. One of the recent lists was over 25,000 lines, so be sure your email can handle the volume before you request the list.

Subscribing to the list is the Internet jargon for being added to a mailing list. Some of the lists have a great deal of volume coming to them on a daily basis. The DB2 Discussion List is one of those. It is common to receive 25 emails from it in a day. Other discussion lists have very low volume.

To SUBSCRIBE send an email to the address that is listed with the mailing list name on the list you received from BITNET (or borrowed from a friend that had alredy received it). As before, leave the subject blank and put SUBSCRIBE listname in the message body. Listname is the name of the list you wish to subscribe to. In many cases you will receive an email asking you to confirm that you wish to subscribe. In some cases there is a code in this email and you must send this code back to the LISTSERVer. Don't be concerned with all these details, the email you receive gives very clear instructions on how respond. When you are successfully signed up, you should receive another email indicating that you are now a subscriber.

If you decide you want to be removed from the list, you must request to be UNSUBSCRIBed. This is done exactly like subscribing except your message body needs to be UNSUBSCRIBE listname.

Some of the lists that may be interesting to database professional are listed below. The name of the list will generally indicate the subject of the list. These lists are subscribed to by professionals all over the world.
